How it's built

Started at 1,000. Stablecoins and gold tokens excluded. Members are the ten largest coins at each update, and the divisor adjusts when they change so the line stays continuous.

How it's estimated

Bitcoin aims for one block every 10 minutes, so the date is the remaining blocks × 10 minutes. Real block times vary, so the estimate drifts by days.

Market share

How much of the crypto market does each coin hold?

Donut chart of a $3 trillion crypto market: Bitcoin 55%, Ethereum 12%, stablecoins 9% and everything else 24%.
Each coin's share is its market cap divided by the whole market. In this example Bitcoin holds more than half; the calculator uses today's real figures.

What this means

Each coin's share is its market cap divided by the total for all coins KryptoKap tracks. Bitcoin's share is called Bitcoin dominance.

How it's calculated

Share = coin's market cap ÷ total market cap

How to use it

  1. See each large coin's share of the total crypto market.
  2. Compare Bitcoin's share with everything else.
  3. Watch how shares shift over days and weeks.

Worked example

If the whole market is worth $2.6 trillion and a coin is worth $260 billion, its share is 10%. If the market rises 10% and that coin is flat, its share drops to about 9.1%.

Reading the result

Each coin's share is its slice of the total market cap of every coin KryptoKap tracks. Bitcoin's share is known as Bitcoin dominance and is often used as a mood gauge. A rising share usually means money is moving toward Bitcoin and away from smaller coins, while a falling share can mean the opposite. Stablecoin share tends to rise when prices fall, because their value stays put while everything else shrinks.

Mistakes to avoid

Common questions

Why does a coin's share fall when its price rises?

Share is relative. If everything else rises faster, the coin's slice gets smaller.

What's Bitcoin's share called?

Bitcoin dominance. It has its own lesson in Learn.
