How it's built

Started at 1,000. Stablecoins and gold tokens excluded. Members are the ten largest coins at each update, and the divisor adjusts when they change so the line stays continuous.

Countdown

Bitcoin halving

Every 210,000 blocks, the reward for mining new Bitcoin is cut in half.

How it's estimated

Bitcoin aims for one block every 10 minutes, so the date is the remaining blocks × 10 minutes. Real block times vary, so the estimate drifts by days.

Altcoin Season Index

The altcoin season index is 51 today, leaning toward altcoins.

The share of the 100 largest coins that did better than Bitcoin over the last 90 days. When most of them beat Bitcoin, it's altcoin season; when few do, it's Bitcoin season.

How it's measured

Take the 100 largest coins, leave out stablecoins, gold tokens and Bitcoin itself, and count how many rose more (or fell less) than Bitcoin over 90 days. The index is that count as a percentage.

How to read it

75 or more is altcoin season. 25 or less is Bitcoin season. In between, the market leans one way or the other. Because it looks back 90 days, it turns slowly and won't flip on one big day.

Why it matters

In Bitcoin season, Bitcoin tends to lead and most other coins lag behind it. In altcoin season, money spreads out into smaller coins. Neither lasts forever, and the switch between them is often where the biggest gaps between coins open up.

What it doesn't tell you

Whether the market is rising or falling. If everything drops and Bitcoin drops least, it's still Bitcoin season. Check it together with the Fear & Greed score or the KryptoKap 10 to see the direction.

Reading it with Bitcoin dominance

The two usually move in opposite directions, so when the altcoin season index climbs, Bitcoin's share of the market tends to shrink. When they disagree, it often means a few large altcoins are doing the work while most smaller ones aren't.

Questions

What is altcoin season?

A stretch when most large cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin do better than Bitcoin. On this index, it means 75% or more of the top 100 coins beat Bitcoin over 90 days.

What does Bitcoin season mean?

It means the opposite, that 25% or fewer of the top 100 coins did better than Bitcoin over 90 days, so Bitcoin is leading the market.

Why are stablecoins left out?

They're built to stay at $1, so they would count as beating Bitcoin whenever Bitcoin falls, which says nothing about altcoins.

How often does it change?

It's recalculated every 30 minutes, but because it compares 90-day performance it usually moves a few points a day at most.
