How it's built

Started at 1,000. Stablecoins and gold tokens excluded. Members are the ten largest coins at each update, and the divisor adjusts when they change so the line stays continuous.

Countdown

How it's estimated

Bitcoin aims for one block every 10 minutes, so the date is the remaining blocks × 10 minutes. Real block times vary, so the estimate drifts by days.

Today's crypto prices by market cap

Past investment calculator

What would money put into a coin on a past date be worth today?

Chart of a coin rising from $40 to $74 over 12 months: $1,000 invested at the start buys 25 coins, now worth $1,850, a gain of 85%.
$1,000 at $40 buys 25 coins. At today's $74 they're worth $1,850, an 85% gain. The calculator does this with real daily prices for any coin and date. Free to reuse

What this means

This uses the coin's daily closing price on the date you pick (or the nearest earlier day) and today's price. The fee is taken off the amount invested.

A result shows one path through history. A different start date can give a very different answer, so try a few.

How it's calculated

Value today = (amount − fee) ÷ price on that date × price today

How to use it

  1. Pick a coin and a past date.
  2. Enter the amount you'd have invested and any fee.
  3. Compare the result with the same money in Bitcoin.

Worked example

$1,000 put into a coin that cost $2.00 on your chosen date buys 500 coins (before fees). If it's $3.10 today, those coins are worth $1,550, a 55% gain. If Bitcoin rose 80% over the same days, the same money in Bitcoin would have done better.

Reading the result

The headline figure is what your money would be worth today, after the fee. Below it you'll see the percentage gain or loss, how many coins you'd have bought and at what price, and what the same money would be worth if it had gone into Bitcoin instead. That last line is the fair benchmark, because if a coin didn't beat Bitcoin over the same dates, holding Bitcoin would have done better for less risk. Watch the shape of the chart as well as the end point. A coin that finished up 200% but spent a year down 80% along the way was a much harder hold than the final number suggests.

Mistakes to avoid

Common questions

Why does the date matter so much?

Crypto prices swing widely, so moving the start date by a few weeks can turn a gain into a loss. Try several dates to see the range.

Does it include staking rewards or airdrops?

No. It only uses the price, so any extra coins you'd have earned aren't counted.
