How it's built

Started at 1,000. Stablecoins and gold tokens excluded. Members are the ten largest coins at each update, and the divisor adjusts when they change so the line stays continuous.

How it's estimated

Bitcoin aims for one block every 10 minutes, so the date is the remaining blocks × 10 minutes. Real block times vary, so the estimate drifts by days.

Flippening watch

Which coins are closest to swapping ranks?

Two market cap lines converging: coin A at $120 billion and coin B rising to $100 billion. Coin B needs a 20% rise, or coin A a 16.7% fall, to swap ranks.
Coin B at $100 billion needs +20% to reach coin A's $120 billion, or coin A would have to fall 16.7%. The flippening watch tracks these gaps for every neighbouring pair. Free to reuse

What this means

For each pair of neighbors, this shows how much the lower coin's market cap would need to rise to pass the one above, with everything else unchanged. Stablecoins are left out.

How it's calculated

Gap = market cap of coin above ÷ market cap of coin below − 1

How to use it

  1. Scan the list of neighboring coins closest in size.
  2. Read the gap, which shows how far the lower coin needs to rise to pass the one above.
  3. Open a pair to compare them in detail.

Worked example

If the coin ranked 12th is worth $9.5 billion and the 11th is worth $10 billion, the gap is about 5.3%. A 5.3% rise by the 12th, or a 5% fall by the 11th, would swap them.

Reading the result

Each row is a pair of neighbors in the rankings. The gap shows how much the lower coin's market cap would need to rise, with the coin above staying still, to take its place. Small gaps under 5% can close in a single day; gaps over 50% usually need a long run or a slump in the coin above. The list updates with prices, so pairs move in and out as the market shifts.

Mistakes to avoid

Common questions

Why are stablecoins left out?

They aren't meant to change in price, so a flip involving them says little about the market.

How often do top coins flip?

Close neighbors can swap several times a week. Gaps over 20% rarely close quickly.
