How it's estimated

Bitcoin aims for one block every 10 minutes, so the date is the remaining blocks × 10 minutes. Real block times vary, so the estimate drifts by days.

BITO: ProShares Bitcoin ETF

Gets its Bitcoin exposure through futures contracts rather than holding Bitcoin itself, so its return can drift from the coin's.

Chart over 12 months: the coin stays at $100 while a futures ETF that sells each expiring contract at $100 and buys the next at $100.50 falls to $94.19, a 5.8% loss from roll costs alone.
When later contracts cost more than expiring ones, every monthly roll loses a little. At 0.5% a month, a fund falls 5.8% in a year even though the coin went nowhere.

How it gets its exposure

The fund holds futures contracts, not Bitcoin itself. When contracts near expiry it sells them and buys later ones, and when later contracts cost more (common in crypto) that roll eats into returns. Over long periods a futures fund usually trails the coin by more than its fee.

Where the numbers come from

KryptoKap reads ProShares's own published fund data once a day after the US market close. NAV is the value of the fund's holdings per share, not the trading price, though for these funds the two are usually close. Visit the issuer's site.

BITO has the lowest fee of the 1 futures Bitcoin funds listed here. Run the fee race

Questions about BITO

Does BITO hold Bitcoin?

No. BITO holds Bitcoin futures contracts and rolls them before they expire. Its return can drift from Bitcoin's, usually downward when later contracts cost more than nearer ones.

How much does BITO cost to own?

Its yearly fee is 0.95%, about $95 a year on $10,000, taken out of the fund's assets a little each day. Brokerage commissions and the bid-ask spread come on top.

Who runs BITO?

ProShares, which launched it in October 2021. The issuer's prospectus has the full objective, holdings and risks.
